A man believed to have links to the death of a notorious underworld figure has been shot dead in a targeted daylight attack in Melbourne's north.

A man has been shot dead in Melbourne’s north in what police believe was a targeted attack.

Emergency services were called to Champions Parade in Wollert just before 9am today, where two men were involved in a fight before shots were fired.

One of the men died at the scene while the other fled in a vehicle.

It is believed the victim was a 22-year-old local man who was known police. 

9News understands he is suspected of being involved in the murder of underworld figure Sam “The Punisher” Abdulrahim in January.

“It appears very deliberate and targeted,” police said.

Detectives have found a burnt-out vehicle on Amery Street in Reservoir and are investigating whether it is linked to today’s shooting.

A crime scene has been established in Wollert. Members of the community are asked to avoid the area.

Police assured residents that there is no threat to the community.
