Victoria Police has released an enhanced image of a man they allege was involved in an arson attack that killed Melbourne woman Katie Tangey.

She was housesitting for her brother, who was on his honeymoon at the time.

Victoria Police said Tangey was “completely innocent” and had “nothing to do with the illicit tobacco trade.”

Today, police have released an image of a man they wish to speak to in relation to the arson.

He is described as Middle Eastern in appearance, aged between 25-30 years old with a slim build.

“If you recognise the man in the facefit, have any knowledge of those involved or the location of the car – a dark coloured BMW X3 or X5 – I cannot implore you enough to find it in yourself to do the right thing and come forward,” Detective Inspector Chris Murray said.

The image was made from enhancing CCTV footage allegedly relating to the fire.

The footage shows a dark coloured vehicle, similar to a BMW X3 or X5, travelling on Forsyth Road in Truganina at 2.12am

CCTV footage from outside the home shows a similar car parked in front of the house with two men inside, before the home explodes into flames and the pair flee.

A ring camera at the home also captured two men, one appearing to be carrying a jerry can, fleeing the scene after the house exploded.

At 2.30am, Tangey called emergency services, reporting she needed help as she was trapped inside.

“This is one of the most tragic incidents I have seen in my 38 years of policing,” Murray said.

“Katie Tangey was 27, she had her whole life ahead of her, and the night this occurred, she was staying away from home for the first time ever.

“Katie had just enough time to call triple zero, and she would have spent her final moments on her own, knowing she was going to die.

“It is an unimaginable horror I hope nobody else has to experience.

Two men allegedly arrived at the home on Dover Street in Truganina about 2am and poured accelerant inside it before it went up in flames while the woman was inside.

Since the fire, police have received several tips through Crimestoppers.

“We know this is solvable, and we know we are getting closer,” Murray said.

“We know this, because there are people out there who are talking and who are providing information.

One report mentioned a pseudonym or nickname of a person of interest. Police are asking the person who made the call to reach out with more information.

Investigations continue.
