A section of turf unexpectedly collapsed at AJ Burkitt Oval in Heidelberg late yesterday afternoon, drawing the attention of local residents. Crowds gathered at the scene until police arrived to cordon off the area, urging the public to keep their distance for safety reasons.
The location of the sinkhole is reportedly close to where underground boring machines are currently in operation as part of the North East Link project. However, the exact cause of the collapse remains unclear at this time.
Banyule City Council addressed the situation on social media, stating it is actively collaborating with pertinent agencies to evaluate the issue and decide on the necessary steps forward.
Additionally, Vic Emergency has issued a warning that the sinkhole could potentially expand, reinforcing the advice for people to avoid the vicinity.

The body promised a new update at 5pm this evening if there were no changes beforehand.
No further plans on repairing the sinkhole have been announced.
