The NSW coastline has been forced to shut down several beaches as towering waves and hazardous surf conditions sweep through the area this weekend. Following a scorching heatwave last weekend, Sydney now finds itself preparing for what could be the soggiest weekend of the season.

In particular, Curl Curl Beach in Sydney is witnessing waves climbing to a staggering five metres in height, putting both beachgoers and surfers on high alert. The perilous surf has led to the closure of several popular beaches, including Newcastle, Bronte, Tamarama, Coogee, Cronulla, and Maroubra, as per Surf Life Saving Australia’s Beachsafe website.

Beach visitors are advised to exercise caution, with one local expressing the sentiment shared by many: “We haven’t gone in today. It’s terribly rough,” they told Today this morning.

The rough conditions have resulted in the closure of multiple beaches across the NSW coast, including Newcastle, Bronte, Tamarama, Coogee, Cronulla and Maroubra, according to Surf Life Saving Australia's Beachsafe website.

"We haven't gone in today. It's terribly rough," a beachgoer told Today this morning.

"People have gone in, they're mad. They're crazy.

"It's rough."

People are being urged to stay out of the water over the weekend after a hazardous surf warning was issued for large parts of the NSW coast yesterday.

The Bureau of Meteorology urged people to remain vigilant, warning that surf and swell conditions are expected to be a hazard for coastal activities, including rock fishing, boating, and swimming

The conditions have hit the NSW south coast and will continue to move up north, with swells expected from Batemans Bay to Newcastle and are expected to last all weekend.

Campers in low-lying areas have been told to evacuate because of the powerful weather and tides expected to roll in.
