This morning, the junior Coalition partner convened to select a replacement for Littleproud, resulting in Matt Canavan’s victory over Bridget McKenzie and former deputy Kevin Hogan.
The Nationals, known for keeping the specifics of their internal votes under wraps, have not disclosed the exact vote counts, leaving the margin of Canavan’s win undisclosed.
Meanwhile, Victorian representative Darren Chester has been appointed as the deputy leader.
Announcing Canavan’s success, party whip Michelle Landry expressed optimism about the party’s future, stating, “We have a significant challenge ahead of us with two years to improve our standing in the polls. Today, we opted for strong leadership, and we’re eager to get on with the task at hand.”
“So we really need strong leadership, I think we’ve voted for that today and we’re looking forward to getting on with the job.”
Littleproud announced his resignation yesterday afternoon, saying he was “buggered” and no longer had the energy to lead the party.
