In a surprising turn of events, a newly appointed mayor in the western region of Melbourne has decided to take a step back from his leadership position amid growing criticism over a character reference he once wrote for an individual later found guilty of child sex crimes.
This morning, Preet Singh, the mayor of Wyndham, issued a public apology and announced his temporary withdrawal from the mayoral duties, just under two weeks after assuming the role.
The controversy arose when it became known that Singh had penned a reference in 2024 for Kashyap Patel, who was then facing allegations related to the grooming and sexual exploitation of a minor.
Although Singh composed the letter before his tenure on the council, its contents only became a matter of public knowledge this week, leading to increasing demands for his resignation.
“The character reference I provided was made before my election, but I understand that the timing does not negate the concerns it has sparked regarding my judgment. For this, I am profoundly sorry,” Singh expressed.
“I sincerely apologise for any hurt or harm caused, particularly to the victim and those in our community impacted by this issue.”
Residents have organised a protest outside Wyndham’s council offices in Werribee this evening, as anger continues to build within the community.
“I respect the right of community members to express their views, including through peaceful protest,” Singh said.
“I am reaching out to offer to meet with those leading the demonstration, to listen and convey my sincere sympathies directly.”
Councillor Jasmine Hill has stepped in as acting mayor while the situation unfolds.Â
Singh has not indicated how long he intends to remain on leave from the mayoralty.
