From sitting on the bottle-o counter, wandering the aisles of the local Woollies to taking up residence (uninvited) inside locals' apartments, he has become a well-known sight in Bondi.

Bentley the cat has such wanderlust, he makes frequent appearances on the Bondi Local Loop Facebook page.

Sydney locals are either confused when he's turned up in their house and curled up somewhere comfy – or thrilled to receive a visit.

The pale ginger and white cat just loves to wander, his owner says.

Elaine Moynan says she has tried to keep him inside, but he just won't stand for it.

"I've tried to keep him in but it's impossible," she said.

The Moynan family adopted Bentley when he was six weeks old, around nine years ago.

He had been found wandering in her boss' daughter's apartment block.

And while Moynan had planned for him to be an indoor cat, her three daughters took him into the garden one day – and that was it.

Elaine Moynan says she has tried to keep Bentley the cat him inside, but he just won't stand for it.

Also known as the Blair Street cat because that's where he lives, Bentley's travels have take him far and wide.

"He just wanders," Moynan said.

"He literally follows people. I'm wondering if he's half dog.

"He's hilarious and then he comes back and lays on my younger daughter's bed."

Bentley once went home with one of the Bondi Rescue Lifeguards, Harries.

Another time Moynan was at the gym when a woman came up to her.

"This lady goes, 'Bentley is at my house' and it was literally two kilometres away in Dover Heights," she said.

"I walked in, there's Bentley sitting on the sofa.

"And there's this huge window and I can see the Sydney Harbour Bridge…"

Indeed it's clear Bentley has no qualms about making himself at home.

"This cat came into BWS a while ago and hasn't left. Does anyone own it?" reads one Facebook post about him.

"We have inadvertently adopted someone's cat tonight! They're currently sitting on our armchair watching Ash Barty," another local wrote.

"Found this biggish white cat literally outside my door at 1.30pm. Seems to love me. It's now asleep in the only sunny spot in my flat," one local wrote.

And in the comments, other locals gleefully chimes in to identify the interloper as Bentley.

However Bentley has likely lost a few of his nine lives.

A few years ago, Moynan, who works in IT, had given up on ever seeing him again after he didn't come home for months.

She thought he had maybe been hit by a car and got rid of his stuff.

Amazingly, he turned up over an hour's drive away.

"I got a call to say 'have you left Bondi? Because this is the Hawkesbury Pound and we have your cat.'" Moynan said.

"I reckon somebody stole him and he escaped."

Another time he went missing for five months.

Amazingly, he was handed into Camperdown vets.

"He looked like he had been on the street," Moynan said.

"He just had cuts everywhere and was really anxious."

And while she thought the wily feline had finally learned his lesson, she was wrong.

While Moynan has considered attaching an Apple Airtag to him, she said has enough trouble keeping collars on his neck for long.

"I buy Kmart collars in bulk," she said.
