Mamdani’s ascent has caught political analysts off guard, with many previously considering his movement too extreme. Supported by a coalition of progressives and fueled by widespread grassroots energy, Mamdani has emerged as a pivotal figure challenging the city’s long-standing power structures.
In a significant show of support, former US President Barack Obama reached out to Mamdani on Saturday, commending his campaign efforts and offering his counsel should Mamdani secure victory in the election.
Mamdani later celebrated with influential Democrats Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, raising their hands in a symbolic gesture of unity and triumph.
Meanwhile, Andrew Cuomo is vying for the mayor’s seat as an independent, having been defeated by Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Curtis Sliwa, who founded the crime prevention organization Guardian Angels, stands as the Republican contender.
Cuomo has labeled Mamdani’s campaign pledges as impractical, questioning their feasibility.
Cuomo has criticised these promises as unrealistic.
