Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart will be farewelled with full police honours at a private ceremony at the Victoria Police Academy in Glen Waverley.

Senior Constable De Waart’s funeral will take place on September 5, while Detective Leading Senior Constable Thompson will be farewelled on September 8.

The pair died on a property in Porepunkah, about 300km from Melbourne, when they and a third officer were ambushed while serving a warrant for alleged child sex offences to Dezi Freeman.

The third officer was seriously wounded and is recovering in hospital, while the manhunt to locate Freeman, who fled the scene, continues.

The tight-knit Alpine community continues to rally around the force in what has been described as some of its darkest days.

Players, umpires and officials at local football and netball clubs have committed to wearing blue bands during this week’s finals matches, in honour of the two fallen officers.

Floral tributes continue to grow at Wangaratta Police Station, as people travel far and wide to pay their respects to the two officers.

Earlier today, members of the Veterans’ Motorcycle Club travelled from NSW to pay tribute at the police station.
