“There’d be very few cases where you’d have a crime scene of such a horrific nature for our officers and all first responders involved,” WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said.

9News understands the family was home at the time and the baby’s teenage sister ran to neighbours to raise the alarm.

The mother was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital under police guard.

Blanch said it was believed that there may have been issues with drugs.

It’s understood police were called to the home as recently as three weeks ago when neighbours heard yelling, with one of them going inside to make sure the baby boy was safe.

Today, the homicide squad charged the 31-year-old mother with murder.

She will face Perth Magistrates Court tomorrow.
