“I’ve reached a point where I believe it’s time,” he announced to reporters in Canberra this afternoon.
“I think it’s the right moment to hand over to a new leader.”
Although he plans to step down from his position as the leader of the federal parliamentary party, Littleproud intends to continue serving as the representative for his regional Queensland constituency, Maranoa.
When asked about his decision to step down after four years in the leadership role, Littleproud admitted he no longer had the energy required for the job.
“I’m worn out, mate,” he candidly replied.
“You’ve to be honest with yourself… I love the Nationals Party. I grew up in it. I’ll bleed it till the day I die – green and gold.
“I love it, and it would be wrong for me to say that I’m the right person to continue to lead.”
Having become Nationals leader following the 2022 federal election, Littleproud was a leading proponent of the Coalition’s nuclear energy policy taken to last year’s election.
Since that election defeat, Littleproud oversaw two Coalition splits in less than a year, the second of which eventually led to Sussan Ley being replaced as Liberal leader.
