An unexpected incident unfolded at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville today when the floor collapsed during a routine group photo of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. This unexpected event occurred shortly before 2 p.m.
Fellow Defence Force personnel quickly sprang into action, administering first aid while waiting for paramedics to arrive at the scene.
Emergency responders swiftly implemented a mass-casualty plan, prioritizing the soldiers based on the severity of their injuries.
In total, 96 military members underwent assessment. Sixteen of them required further medical attention and were transported to Townsville University Hospital. An additional 41 soldiers received care at the on-site medical facility.
Fortunately, the injuries sustained were not life-threatening, although several individuals suffered from limb fractures and broken bones.
“All members that were were injured are currently receiving appropriate medical first aid,” Lieutenant Colonel Peter Francis said.
“The area itself has been secured, and an investigation will take place to ensure that incidents like this don’t happen again.”
The Defence Force has contacted the families of those impacted.
