Nearly 1000 jobs will be slashed from the NSW transport department under a restructure within the state government department.

In an email sent by Transport for NSW secretary Josh Murray and seen by 9news.com.au, about 950 senior service manager and award roles will be slashed as the department assesses its operating model.

This is in addition to a previous announcement to cut 300 senior executive roles.

Murray acknowledged the news would be “significant” and “concerning” for many people.

“We have to get back to a model that is sustainable for the long term, delivers on our commitments, and provides appropriate career paths for our people,” he said.

“That also means reducing duplication, removing unclear reporting lines, and ensuring all our people are clear on what’s expected of them.

“We deeply value the significant contributions of those in our regional communities and on the frontline, supporting our customers and passengers every day.

“Our intention is to minimise the impact on these employees as much as possible.

“Through consultation, we’ll seek your feedback to help us keep the right work going to meet the organisation’s strategic objectives and our budget targets.

“I have also shared this information with the transport unions and have been upfront with them during past discussions about the scale of the changes we need to deliver.”

Unions were briefed on the job cuts on Wednesday morning.

Transport for NSW employs about 15,000 staff.
