Around 100 neo-Nazi protesters marched through Melbourne CBD in the early hours of this morning.

Victoria’s premier Jacinta Allan responded to police reports of the people in masks wearing black marching through the city from 12.40am today, saying: “We’re not afraid of these goons.”

They headed to Flagstaff Gardens where police say the protest broke up at 1.25am.

“Nazis don’t belong in this country and they know it. That’s why they hide behind masks in the dark,” Allen said.

She said new laws coming into force next month will give police more powers.

“Our criminal anti-vilification laws come into effect next month. We will introduce powers for police to unmask cowards at protests after that.

“We’re not afraid of these goons – but we won’t tolerate them either.”

Police say a man was assaulted and taken to hospital after confronting the group.

“Victoria Police respects the right to protest however there is absolutely no place for antisemitic, racist or hate-based behaviour in our society and police will not tolerate such activity,” Victoria Police said.
