An 18-year-old man from Canberra has found himself at the center of controversy after allegedly making Nazi salutes at a suburban shopping center on separate occasions in recent months. The incidents have sparked concern and scrutiny within the community.

The young man, identified as a resident of Weston, is also accused of trespassing at the Australian National University multiple times throughout August and September. During these incursions, he reportedly placed propaganda-style stickers on various buildings and properties, raising alarm among university officials and students.

In one particularly troubling incident in October, the man is said to have performed a Nazi salute in response to being confronted while he was distributing stickers at the shopping center. This act not only deeply offended bystanders but also drew the attention of authorities.

Another incident allegedly took place on December 12, where the man repeated the Nazi salute at a different shopping center, further escalating concerns about his actions.

As part of the investigation, law enforcement executed a search warrant at his property on Wednesday, seeking to uncover more evidence related to these troubling activities.

Police seized multiple items, including mobile phones, a computer, stickers, storage devices, a video camera and clothing.

The man was charged with two counts of public display of prohibited Nazi symbols or giving Nazi salute, two counts of damaging Commonwealth property and two counts of offensive or disorderly behaviour on Commonwealth premises.

AFP Assistant Commissioner Counter Terrorism & Special Investigations Stephen Nutt said the acts will not be tolerated by the AFP.

“The AFP established the National Security Investigations team in September to target groups and individuals causing high harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including attempts to vilify marginalised communities.

“Antisemitism is a cancer that requires swift and direct action, which is what the AFP is continuing to do. Along with our law enforcement partners, we are committed to stopping hate, division and violence in the community.”

The 18-year-old will face court today.
