Victims of Perth builder collapse urged to speak with insurers

Victims of a Perth builder are being encouraged to speak with their insurers after it went bust.

Liquidators have been called in to wind up the Tingey Development Group, leaving dozens of homes unfinished.

Perth couple Simon and Sheri Davies have been waiting a long time to live in their dream home and now have newfound hope it may finally be built.

”There’s been so many tears, so many tears,” Sheri told 9News.

“You just want to be in your safe space, your home.”

The pair bought a block in Bayswater three years ago. When their builder, Modco Residential, collapsed the following year, they trusted Tingey to get the job done.

”At the start it was great, when they were building quickly, but once it all slowed down … very hard to get in contact,” Simon said.

The structure had been scheduled for completion this time last year but it remained untouched for so long, squatters eventually took over.

Their home is one of 15 projects Tingey failed to finish before it went into liquidation this week.

The couple had to pay thousands of dollars on the mortgage and their rent in the meantime.

“We wanted to plan a family earlier than this but we live in a rental, that’s a month-to-month rental, so there’s no security in that,” Sheri said.

The government recently received two complaints about the company.

It’s the third WA building contractor to enter insolvency in just a few months.

Tingey’s liquidation comes with some positive news, though.

It means customers now have a pathway forward to make a claim under home indemnity insurance and get a new builder.

However, the industry is still struggling with a shortage of skilled workers in the state.

9News has contacted the Tingey Development Group for comment.
