The New South Wales police oversight body is set to look into the conduct of officers during Monday’s protest at Sydney Town Hall, following a substantial influx of complaints.

The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) said today it is in the public interest to investigate the actions of NSW police following Monday’s protest opposing the arrival of the Israeli president.

The demonstration became tense amid several allegations of police misconduct directed at the protesters. Despite the backlash, NSW Premier Chris Minns defended the police response as “proportionate.”

Footage shared widely online from the demonstrations showed officers interrupting a group praying as well as force being used to subdue the crowd.

A particular incident that drew widespread criticism involved a video showing officers directing a group of Muslim men to move while they were in prayer. Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon clarified that the directive was not aimed at any specific religion and expressed regret for any offense caused by the interruption of the religious observance.

“I am not going to throw the police under a bus,” Minns said.

The forthcoming investigation will scrutinize both the legality and appropriateness of the actions taken by the NSW Police and the individual officers involved.

The investigation will examine the lawfulness and appropriateness of the actions of NSW Police and individual officers.

The LECC is the independent and specialist oversight body for the NSW Police Force.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the LECC will release a public report to the NSW Parliament.
