Police said it was likely mistaken identity and the matter has been handed over the state’s organised crime unit for investigation.
Firefighters were confronted a ball of flames in the driveway of a home on Hinkler avenue in Condell Park at about 3.30am.
The family faced a race against time to leave the home as explosion after explosion went off in the background.
Thankfully, an elderly woman and a young couple and their cat were all saved.
The blaze started in an Audi parked in the driveway of the duplex and spread not only to the neighbour’s car but to both homes.
Neighbours claim two hooded men were seen running from the street in the moments after.
Police said this was likely a case of mistaken identity with the intended target still unclear but it would be investigated as a potential underworld attack.
In August, another duplex on the street was firebombed by arsonists.
One line of inquiry for police is whether they were also the intended targets of this latest attack.
