A man has been charged after he allegedly led police on several high-speed pursuits with a seven-month-old baby in the front seat of his car earlier this month.

At about 9.30pm on August 7, police travelling south on the Hume Highway at Blair Athol, south-west of Sydney, NSW, detected a sedan they claim was travelling at 168km/h in a 110km/h zone.

The driver allegedly did not pull over when police hit the lights, triggering a pursuit that was called off in short order due to safety concerns.

Police spotted the car again not long after that, at a service station at Sallys Corner.

Officers again tried to pull the driver over, but he allegedly did not stop, kick-starting another pursuit on the Hume Highway near Goulburn.

That pursuit continued until the sedan stopped at a service station on Hume Street in Goulburn.

The driver allegedly locked himself inside the car and refused to open the door when police approached.

Officers smashed the driver’s side window and placed the man under arrest.

Police allege they found an unrestrained seven-month-old baby, known to the man, in the front passenger seat.

Paramedics attended and assessed the baby, who appeared to be uninjured, before he was taken to hospital for monitoring.

The child is now in his family’s care.

The driver, a 35-year-old man, allegedly returned a negative roadside breath test but a positive roadside drug test.

In a later test at a police station, the man allegedly tested positive to methylamphetamine, with the results sent away for secondary testing.

The man was charged with multiple driving offences, as well as an assault charge police allege was related to an incident earlier that same night.

He was bailed and will appear in court today.
