Speaking on Today this morning, Acting Prime Minister Penny Wong declined to comment on reports in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age that Albanese would not be attending the July summit of the western military alliance.

Last week, NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said the leaders of non-member nations Australia, Japan, Korea and New Zealand would be invited for the second time to the pact’s annual gathering.

There has been no official comment from the prime minister’s office.

Wong, who is also foreign minister, said she expected an official announcement will be made “in due course”.

The summit will be held for the first time in Lithuania and will focus on “strengthening the alliance’s collective defence and deterrence and on increasing support for Ukraine,” according to a NATO.

The NATO summit will be held as China strengthens its relationship with Russia and exerts influence across the Indo-Pacific region.

Albanese has a packed international schedule over the coming months, including attending the coronation of King Charles III in the UK in May and trips Japan, Singapore, India, the US and potentially Beijing.
