An acclaimed Australian author has appeared in court on alleged child exploitation offences.
Craig Silvey, who has penned popular coming-of-age novels including Jasper Jones, Runt and Honeybee, faced a Perth court this afternoon accused of distributing and possessing child exploitation material.
Authorities have accused the 44-year-old of engaging with individuals involved in child exploitation on the internet.
Following his arrest, officers confiscated his electronic devices for further investigation.
As a father of three, he has had a young writer’s award named after him and is a frequent visitor to schools.
Two of his novels have been turned into major films, and his book Jasper Jones is part of the national high school curriculum.
During a bail hearing, the court was informed that Silvey has access to resources abroad, raising concerns that he might attempt to flee.
He was granted bail this afternoon.
Silvey is yet to enter a plea to the charges and is due back in court next month.
