A flight bound for Dallas faced an unexpected detour when it had to make an unscheduled stop in Papeete, Tahiti. The diversion was prompted by the disruptive behavior of a passenger, leading local authorities to board the aircraft and arrest the individual.
During the incident, a fellow traveler captured footage of the unruly passenger exiting a bathroom and engaging in a heated argument with the flight attendants. The passenger’s demeanor was visibly impaired—he was stumbling, his speech slurred, and he was liberally using profanity, much to the dismay of those around him, including families with children.
Despite the disruption, the plane was refueled in Papeete and successfully continued its journey to Dallas. Meanwhile, the rowdy passenger faced immediate consequences; he has been banned from flying with any airline under the Qantas Group, which also includes Jetstar.
In the video, a flight attendant is heard admonishing the disruptive traveler, highlighting the presence of children and urging him to behave more maturely. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges airline crew members face in managing passenger conduct at 30,000 feet.
“There’s kids around everywhere and you’re acting immature,” one flight attendant told the passenger.
“You have to behave yourself, you’re on a plane.”
The passenger expressed some confusion at the fact he was on a plane, and asked one flight attendant if he was “smoking any weed”.
“I was just about to walk out for a cigarette,” the passenger said.
Goldstein’s video shows the passenger getting more aggressive when he is told to go to the back of the plane.
“The safety of our customers and our crew is our number one priority,” a Qantas spokesperson told 9News.com.au.
“We have zero tolerance for disruptive or threatening behaviour on our flights.”
The Australian Federal Police have been contacted for comment.
