“I am angry and aggrieved and anguished for what I have lost and for what it cost.”

These were the words of the mother of Jade Young, who lost her life in a stabbing spree in Westfield Bondi Junction on a busy Saturday afternoon.

Young, 47, was one of six people fatally stabbed by Joel Cauchi, 40, a diagnosed schizophrenic who was experiencing psychotic symptoms at the time.

Her mother, Elizabeth Young, was the first of numerous family members to speak today of their grief, pain and loss as a five-week inquest into the tragedy draws to a close.

Hours before the tragedy, she said she received a heart emoji in a text from her architect daughter responding to a photo of mushrooms she had taken during her Saturday walk.

“I hurt so terribly that our … slightly goofy, funny, gentle girl no longer has the chance to be, to exist in the now and future,” she told the court.

“As it is, she exists in the past only.”

Young decried the “trauma porn” she said she experienced from the media after the April 2024 attack, including seeing footage of her daughter’s lifeless body – being worked on by paramedics – broadcast globally.

She also criticised a photographer for taking a photograph of her and her family while mourning at a vigil in Bondi Beach.

“To think images of a grieving family or a woman lying dead is newsworthy sickens me,” she said.

“As with T S Eliot, it makes me fear for humankind’s future.”

Jade’s brother Peter Young also spoke of the anger he felt at his sister’s murder and how the event had destabilised his family.

“I’m devastated at the prospect of a future without her,” he said.

The family of security guard Faraz Tahir, 30, attended the inquest where a joint statement was read out by his elder brother Muzafar.

Tahir was a brave, compassionate man who had moved to Australia from Pakistan seeking peace and security.

His brother Muzafar spoke of his courage that day as he ran towards danger to help others, paying the ultimate price.

“By sacrificing his life, Faraz died with honour,” Muzafar said.

“To many of us he will always be remembered as a symbol of bravery. Our hero.”

He also recognised the pain that Cauchi’s parents must be feeling.

“They raised their son and have lost him, and we know that this tragedy is not their fault.”

Images of Faraz were played to the court while his brother spoke.

As well as Young and Tahir, Cauchi killed Dawn Singleton, 25, Ashlee Good, 38, Pikria Darchia, 55, and Yixuan Cheng, 27.

He also injured 10 people during the attack.

The inquest previously heard the 40-year-old had been successfully treated for schizophrenia since he was a teenager.

But he was weaned off antipsychotics and fell through the cracks of the mental health system before ending up homeless in Sydney.
