Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been criticised by a group of prominent US Republicans for his proposed recognition of Palestinian statehood.

The open letter was signed by 25 Republicans and addressed to Albanese, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carey; it was also sent to US President Donald Trump and the Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The letter claimed each country’s decision to recognise Palestinian statehood was a reward for terrorism and Hamas’ atrocities committed on October 7, 2023.

“This is a reckless policy that undermines prospects for peace,” the letter said. “It sets the dangerous precedent that violence, not diplomacy, is the most expedient means for terrorist groups like Hamas to achieve their political aims.

Albanese landed in New York this morning ahead of a state visit where he hopes to meet President Trump, which has still not happened since the latter returned to the White House at the start of this year.

“What we want to see is increased peace and security and stability around the world,” Albanese said on the topic of Palestinian statehood when he arrived in New York. “Australia plays an important role. We are a trusted partner and an ally.”

However, the open letter believes the measures by Albanese and his allies pose a security risk to Israel and could increase antisemitic incidents in their countries.

“Hamas’ war crimes are clear, and its rejection of diplomacy should lead your countries to impose more pressure. Instead, you offer greater rewards,” the letter said.

“Rewarding entities that refuse to renounce violence or engage in meaningful negotiations only serves to further entrench divisions and instability.”

The letter concludes with a warning that “punitive measures” could occur if each country continues to defy the United States’ policy on the issue.

“The United States is committed to Israel’s security and to fostering a just and lasting peace in the Middle East through direct negotiations,” it said.

“Unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state jeopardises this. It risks perpetuating tensions and rewarding terrorist entities that seek Israel’s destruction.”
