Revolutionizing Education: The Potential Impact of a Four-Day Work Week for Teachers

The Australian Education Union is urging the Victorian government to trial a four-day work week for teachers to avoid future recruitment issues.
With the right to work from home set to be enshrined in law in the state, the union put the teacher proposal to the government late last year.

The Australian Education Union (AEU) is advocating for a 30.4-hour job-share arrangement within public schools. This initiative aims to provide teachers with the opportunity to work remotely while ensuring that students continue to attend school five days a week.

AEU president Justin Mullaly said the trial could help attract and retain staff.

“Our goal is for the state government to initiate a pilot program that offers true flexibility for staff in public schools. This would allow them to spend fewer hours on-site and have the option to work from home,” explained Mullaly.

The union posits that such a change could attract more professionals to the education sector, which is currently grappling with a staffing shortage.

Victorian Deputy Premier Ben Carroll expressed pride in the state’s educators, describing them as “among the best in the nation.”

“Our teachers are entitled to salaries and benefits that are competitive on a national level,” Carroll asserted.

The Australian Principals Federation said it would be challenging to put the proposal into effect, arguing teaching is a social job and an important part of the job is being at school.
