Rugby union fans have been left baffled over the weekend as Fiji and the Hurricanes stepped out for their U20 Super Rugby Pacifica quarter-final match, wearing nearly identical kits.

In bizarre scenes, the U20 sides took the field at Owen Delaney Park in Taupo, New Zealand, for the clash.

The Hurricanes appeared to don a white and yellow alternate jersey, with black shorts and socks.

Meanwhile, Fiji also donned their traditional white home jersey, black shorts and white socks- making it very difficult for viewers to tell the two teams apart.

The Hurricane’s home jersey for the 2025 season is primarily yellow and the decision for both sides to wear very similar uniforms during the clash has been blasted online.

‘Poor ref,’ one YouTube user wrote.

‘Worst jersey clash of all time,’ another rugby fan wrote.

‘Who the hell organised the Hurricanes’ jersey…

‘Sleeping on the wheel again.’

The Hurricanes secured a huge 65-10 victory against Fiji during the match but a club spokesperson has since addressed the kit clash.

In a statement to Stuff, the Hurricanes said the jerseys had seemed ‘more yellow’ in photos they were shown prior to the tournament.

‘We definitely acknowledge the similarities in the Hurricanes and Fiji jerseys from the Super Rugby Under 20 match on Saturday,’ the spokesperson said.

‘The Hurricanes jerseys appeared much more yellow in the photo we viewed before the tournament began, but this was much less clear on game day, particularly on broadcast.

‘We apologise to our fans who may have found the match difficult to follow.

The Hurricanes later revealed in a statement that they had thought the kit appeared 'much more yellow' in pictures they were shown prior to the tournament

‘We’ve noted this for the future, so it won’t happen again.’

It’s not the first time we’ve had a farcical kit clash in rugby union.

Back in 2020, the Bulls notably took on the Highlanders with both sides wearing navy blue patterned kits.

The Bulls were then forced to change at half-time due to the jersey clash.
