This morning’s heavy rainfall severed access on numerous roads and submerged low-lying causeways, stranding some locals and preventing them from reaching work or school.
NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole reported that emergency crews were dispatched for several rescue operations, including one for an individual trapped in a tree.
“At present, we have a woman stranded in a tree at Heavitree Gap, and plans are underway for her safe extraction,” stated Dole.
“Additionally, we successfully rescued another woman who was caught in floodwaters at The Gap.
“Moreover, a man was extricated from the river at the Wills Terrace Causeway after being ensnared by the rising waters,” he added.
“Three people were rescued off the roof of a car on the Stephens Causeway after that vehicle became stuck on the bridge.”
Dole said a security guard was also rescued after he was cut off by floodwaters in the town and was unable to get back across a river.
Local state MP Joshua Burgoyne said schools were open today but residents should only travel to schools “if it is safe to do so”.
“There are some teachers, some educators, who are unable to get into school today, so they will be operating at a changed capacity,” Burgoyne said.
“You will not be turned away from school if you arrive there this morning with your children, but obviously if you are able to keep your kids home, that will help the education department.”
“We’d encourage people to stay aware of SecureNT for the latest advice in relation to weather warnings and listen to the advice that’s going out,” Dole said.
Locals have also been urged not to drive through floodwaters.
“If you have to wait an hour to get through a flooded river, please wait,” Burgoyne said.
“If it’s flooded, forget it, the message could not be clearer.
“Please everyone in Alice Springs and surrounding areas, stay safe.”
