Large parts of Queensland are on alert for heavy rain and rapid river rises today.

Overnight, the Taroom region in Queensland’s Western Downs faced severe weather conditions, with rainfall measuring between 100 to 150mm in a span of less than a day. This heavy downpour significantly impacted the area, disrupting daily activities and raising concerns among residents.

Similarly, the Wide Bay area was not spared, as Bundaberg and Hervey Bay saw substantial rainfall. The intense weather patterns brought a sense of urgency to these communities, as they navigated through the challenges posed by the sudden influx of water.

In the central west of the state, Barcaldine experienced flash flooding, with a notable 73mm of rain falling in under 24 hours. The unexpected flooding caught many off-guard, prompting quick responses from local authorities.

Meanwhile, the Gold Coast hinterland was also hit hard, particularly in upper Springbrook, where a staggering 176mm of rain was recorded. The region’s residents and emergency services were on high alert, prepared to tackle the potential risks posed by the flooding.

As these weather events unfolded, emergency services remained vigilant, ready to respond to calls for assistance as communities grappled with the adverse conditions. The resilience and preparedness of these teams were crucial in mitigating the impact of the severe weather on affected areas.

Swift water rescue crews saved four people from rising floodwaters in the North Burnett area just after 7pm yesterday.

A severe weather warning is in place today for north and central Queensland including Charters Towers, Townsville, Moranbah, Ingham, Palm Island and Collinsville.

Mount Low has already recorded 88.0 mm in two hours to 3am today.

With the wet weather expected to continue until at least Monday, police are urging people to never drive through floodwaters.

A 63-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man became trapped in floodwaters in a Mitsubishi Pajero at 7.15pm yesterday.

They were rescued and transported to Biggenden Hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services were also called to Booral Road in Bunya Creek at about 10.40pm after reports a Toyota CHR was caught in floodwaters.

A 56-year-old woman was trapped in a Toyota CHR before a 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old man attempted to rescue her.

The woman was able to be removed from the car but all three became trapped in fast-flowing water.

A short time later, all three people were safely rescued.

The two men were assessed at the scene and the woman was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital for observation.
