Amid escalating political turmoil, a former leader sought refuge in India in August 2024 as her government faced a significant uprising.
The courtroom erupted into applause and cheers as the judge delivered a death sentence, marking a dramatic moment in the trial.
In response to the court’s decision, Hasina condemned the verdict, claiming it was the product of a “corrupt tribunal” orchestrated by a non-elected administration lacking legitimate authority.
“Their fervent demand for the death penalty exposes the ruthless ambition of extremist elements within the interim government to eliminate Bangladesh’s last democratically elected leader and dismantle the Awami League’s influence,” Hasina asserted.
Represented by a state-appointed defense attorney, Hasina’s legal team argued that the accusations against her were unfounded, urging the court to deliver an acquittal.
Worst violence since 1971
Hasina was represented by a state-appointed defence counsel who told the court that the charges against her were baseless and pleaded for her acquittal.
Bangladesh has been tense ahead of the verdict, with at least 30 crude bomb explosions and 26 vehicles torched across the country over the past few days. There have been no casualties, however.
