For years, dementia consistently ranked as the second-leading cause of death in the nation, trailing closely behind ischaemic heart disease. However, in 2024, these two causes swapped places, with dementia taking the top spot.
The gap between the third and fifth leading causes of death is remarkably narrow, with only about 100 fatalities differentiating them. The three conditions are responsible for 9,229, 9,147, and 9,119 deaths, respectively.
Lauren Moran, the head of mortality statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), noted that the prevalent causes of death in 2024 reflect the trends associated with Australia’s ageing demographic.

More than two-thirds (68.2 per cent) of deaths in 2024 were people aged over 75 years, compared to 66.1 per cent 10 years ago, and 63.3 per cent 20 years ago.
The AIHW’s Dementia in Australia report predicted that by 2065, more than one million Australians will be living with dementia — more than double the current number — as Australia’s population grows and ages.
“Although there are things we cannot change, like getting older or genetics, we now know that up to 45 per cent of dementia cases globally could be prevented or delayed by addressing modifiable risk factors.”
What else did the data show about deaths in 2024?
The leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in 2024 was ischaemic heart disease, followed by chronic lower respiratory diseases, diabetes, lung cancer and suicide.
But there was significant variance in risk factors among different demographics.
“We expect that number to go up,” Moran said.
Assaults also increased in 2024. There were 269 deaths due to assault in 2024, with 168 being male and 101 being female. Female deaths due to assault increased by 25 from 2023, and male deaths by four.
