Huge mandatory change coming to one state's garages

Homes with big garages could soon become compulsory in South Australia under a new building code that aims to free up street parking and provide more off-street options.

Premier Peter Malinauskas today announced the proposed new code, which stipulates that any new home with two or more bedrooms must have at least two off-street parking spaces large enough to accommodate modern SUVs.

“If the garages are too small then the street quickly becomes congested,” Malinauskas said.

“People can’t park on their own street, visitors can’t come, garbos can’t collect rubbish and the whole thing becomes a disaster.”

However, the Property Council has expressed concerns that the mandate could drive up the cost of new housing, making it less affordable for first-time buyers and low-income families.

“We need greater investment in public transport to improve connectivity. We can’t just cater to those who already own homes,” Property Council executive director Bruce Djite said.

The proposed change is out for consultation and will be introduced to parliament later this year.
