A growing number of tents have emerged in Carey Park at Southport on the Gold Coast.

Those residing in the makeshift shelters say they have nowhere else to go.

Among those living rough is Matangi Rau Hira, who expressed the group’s desire for a permanent home.

“It’d be great to have a home, to sit in, but unfortunately, it’s not like that for us,” Rau Hira told 9News.

Despite visits from police and the housing department, the group remains resolute in their position, vowing to simply relocate elsewhere if forced to move.

“We’d put it to them, where would you like us to go?” Hira said.

“They mean well, but meaning well doesn’t solve the problems. Actions solve problems.”

Local councillor Brooke Patterson confirmed move-on directions had been issued, citing escalating complaints.

However, Queensland Police assured 9News they will not enforce the directions, opting instead to implement support agencies.

Housing Minister Sam O’Connor said the government was committed to providing outreach teams to engage with those experiencing homelessness.

“Our job is to make sure we get outreach teams there to engage with as many people as we possibly can, that’s what we’re funding and that’s what we’ll continue to support,” O’Connor said.
