Recent studies indicate that a significant number of Australians are planning to skip holiday celebrations this year due to financial difficulties.
A survey conducted by the Salvation Army found that one in four participants will forgo social events because of financial constraints. Furthermore, nearly one in five individuals reported that they won’t be visiting family and friends for the same reason.
Approximately 15% of those surveyed anticipate feeling lonely or isolated during the Christmas season.
“This Christmas should be a time for us to unite as a nation and support each other,” stated Campbell.
“While the holiday season brings joy to many, for others, it can be an incredibly lonely and isolating time.”
“For some, the financial pressure of seeing family and friends is too much, while others don’t have family or friends to turn to, and that is what we are seeing in our research.”
The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal is currently aiming to raise $29 million to support Australians, including through community meals and events that combat loneliness.
Last year, Australians donated more than 350,000 gifts and toys, more than 177,000 meals and provided more than 89,000 bed nights for families in need of accommodation.
“If you are struggling, experiencing loneliness or isolation, or need a hand, please reach out to your local Salvation Army,” Campbell said.
