Cole Allen, dressed in black pants, a matching shirt, and a striking red tie, captured a photograph in his room at the Washington Hilton. This venue was hosting a gala attended by Donald Trump and numerous journalists on Saturday night, officials report.

The 31-year-old resident of Torrance, California, was apprehended after attempting to breach security barriers positioned near the hotel’s ballroom. This action led to a gunfire exchange with Secret Service agents responsible for the event’s protection, according to investigators.

Fresh insights were disclosed in a recent court submission by prosecutors advocating for Allen’s continued detention. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

The prosecution revealed that Allen persistently monitored Trump’s whereabouts online that evening, including watching live footage of the president arriving at the Hilton. Investigators noted that he had drafted emails labeled “Apology and Explanation,” set to be sent around 8:30 p.m.

“His aim was to kill, as evidenced by his attempt to breach security and target his victim with a shotgun. In simple terms, the defendant represents an exceptionally grave threat to public safety if released before trial. Despite his clean criminal record and personal background, this assessment remains unchanged,” stated Assistant US Attorney Charles Jones.

Trump, a Republican, was uninjured. A Secret Service officer wearing a bullet-resistant vest was shot in the vest and survived.

Allen appeared in court on Monday and was charged with the attempted assassination of the president as authorities suggested an attack that disrupted one of Washington’s glitziest events had been planned for at least several weeks. He did not speak at length during the quick court appearance, as is customary. One of his lawyers, Tezira Abe, noted he had no criminal record and said he “is presumed innocent at this time”.

Trump was rushed off the stage by his security team on Saturday night and appeared at the White House two hours later, still in his tuxedo.

“When you’re impactful, they go after you. When you’re not impactful, they leave you alone,” he said.

“They seem to think he was a lone wolf.”

An FBI affidavit filed on Monday revealed other details about the planning behind the assault, with authorities alleging that Allen on April 6 reserved a room for himself at the Washington hotel where the event would be held weeks later under its typical tight security.

He travelled by train cross-country from California, checking himself into the Washington Hilton a day before the dinner with a room reserved for the weekend.
