The driver of an alleged runaway car has been arrested after officers found her hiding in the backyard of a home in northern Adelaide.

Police attempted to stop a Volkswagen sedan on Haydown Road in Elizabeth East at 8.15pm yesterday but the driver allegedly sped off.

After calling in help from the police helicopter, the car was tracked through the suburb and was seen allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road and running a red light through an intersection.

Police successfully spiked the car’s tyres on Stanford Road in Salisbury Heights.

The car then turned into a nearby road, where the male passenger got out and ran away, and the driver allegedly continued onto Featherstone Place.

There, the female driver allegedly ditched the car and also ran off.

Police searching for the pair found the woman hiding in the backyard of a home on Stanford Road.

The woman, a 22-year-old from Elizabeth Grove, was arrested and charged with driving dangerously to escape police pursuit, driving unlicensed, driving unregistered, trespassing and unlawfully on premises.

She was bailed and will face Elizabeth Magistrates Court on May 12. Her car was also impounded for 28 days.

The man, a 35-year-old from Renown Park, was also arrested and charged with breach of bail and outstanding warrants.

He was refused bail and will face court on Monday.
