In the early hours of the morning, around 4 a.m., emergency responders rushed to a residential building in Lidcombe following reports of gunfire.
Upon their arrival, police discovered a 38-year-old man who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities suspect this was a “targeted” assault.
Paramedics provided immediate medical assistance to the victim at the location, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being admitted to Westmead Hospital.
Another individual at the scene experienced an assault, suffering injuries that are not believed to be from gunshots and are not life-threatening.
The two men were acquainted, and the injured individual is currently cooperating with the police investigation.
Auburn Area Commander Superintendent Robert Toynton said early investigations indicate the shooting is linked to organised crime.
“I can assure the community, this is a targeted attack. This is not a random attack,” Toynton said.
“From what we’ve discovered so far, there are strong links to organised crime.”
Toynton said police are now investigating multiple persons of interest, including two men who are described as being “heavy set” and wearing black clothing.
He urged anyone who heard something suspicious between 11pm and 4am to come forward to police.
“Someone must have seen something, someone must have heard something,” he added.
No arrests have been made and a crime scene has been established at the apartment.
