A pedestrian fatality in Melbourne’s south-east and two fatal crashes in rural Victoria have added to a horror month of road trauma across the state.

A yet-to-be-formally identified pedestrian was crossing the Princes Highway near Smith Street in Springvale about 2pm today when she was struck by a car travelling northbound.

The driver stopped to render assistance, but sadly the pedestrian died at the scene.

The intersection is expected to remain closed for some time as police investigate.

Earlier in the day, a crash in Kewell, near Horsham in the state’s north-west claimed the life of a passenger and left a driver in hospital.

Police believe the car was travelling along Henty Highway about 7am when it lost control and rolled.

The passenger of the vehicle died at the scene and the driver was taken to hospital for observation.

They are expected to be interviewed by police.

In a separate incident on the other side of the state, police are investigating another suspected sole-vehicle crash in Browns Plains, near Wodonga.

The car was travelling near the intersection of Chiltern-Howlong and Gooramadda roads when it lost control and crashed into a tree just after 9.30 this morning.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The two fatalities bring the state’s Lives Lost tally to 133 so far this year, which is more than 11 per cent higher than the same time last year.

The crash outside Ararat closed parts of the Western Highway for almost 24 hours as police undertook investigations. (Nine)

Police continue to plead with motorists to drive with caution in the lead up to the King’s Birthday long weekend.

“Over the last three weeks it’s pretty much been carnage on Victorian roads,” detective Detective senior sergeant Paul Lineham said following the triple-fatal crash.

”As a lead up to our King’s Birthday long weekend we just implore drivers to pay attention to the roads.

“If you want to have a drink, don’t drive. Don’t get distracted. Take your time to get to your destination.”
