The ten most dangerous roads in the world, including the ‘devil’s elbow’, ‘route of death’ and Skippers Canyon Road

The most dangerous road in the world isn’t far from our own shores, with New Zealand’s Skippers Canyon Road taking out the title.

The passage, located in the country’s south-west, not far from Queenstown, was hand-carved by miners in the late 1800s, and the conditions are so tricky that rental car companies won’t allow their vehicles onto it, as their insurance isn’t honoured there.

It runs for about 22 kilometres, is unpaved, and mostly single-laned, and features the famous (or infamous) Skippers Bridge – an almost-100-metre crossing that only one vehicle is allowed on at any one time.

Even if you haven’t heard of the treacherous road, you may have seen it – or at least the canyon is goes through – before, as it was one of the locations used for filming Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.
