Tourist Detained for Violating Bali’s Strict Regulations: What You Need to Know

Bali’s law enforcement has issued a reminder for tourists to adhere to local regulations, following the detention of a vacationer during a prominent festival on the island.

The 57-year-old was detained by authorities at 7.15am yesterday while walking with luggage through the Gianyar Regency during Bali‘s Day of Silence, according to Indonesian National Police.
During the annual holiday, known as Nyepi, residents and visitors across the Indonesian island must stay indoors.

Police on patrol in the area found the US tourist and took him to Sukawati Police Station.

The tourist informed authorities that he had to walk from his villa in Ubud after concluding his stay there.

He claimed ignorance regarding the non-operation of vehicles during the holiday.

After explaining the local regulations to him, the police arranged for temporary lodging at a nearby villa for the remainder of his visit.

Gianyar Sub-Regional Police Chief, Chandra Citra Kesuma, emphasized the importance of international travelers respecting Balinese cultural traditions to preserve community peace.

Nyepi is an important day on the Balinese calender which is a time for silence, fasting and meditation for Balinese Hindus.

Activities including work, travel, leisure and entertainment after prohibited between 6am and 6am the following day.

During the holiday, the streets of Bali are empty and the airport remains closed for the entire day.
