The 28-year-old was remembered as an adventurer whose life was just beginning when it was cut short.

The memorial service was a mix of tears and laughter as family and friends shared their cherished memories of Appleby.

“From the kid who lived down the skatepark and jetty, he transformed into a man with a sense of adventure, a love of travel and pride in what he was doing in life,” his sister, Gabrielle Appleby, said.

Appleby returned to his hometown of Streaky Bay for the Summer holidays, and was surfing with friends off The Granites just two days into the New Year when he was taken by the shark.

The tributes began with a paddle-out ceremony on the water over the weekend, where hundreds gathered in honour of Appleby.

“We adored you Lance, we will always miss you,” sister Esther Brands said.

“I will carry you in my heart forever. Always loved, always missed, my baby brother Lancey.”
