A baby boy has tragically died after the car he was in was struck while it was parked on the side of a highway in Queensland.

The male infant was inside a silver Jeep Cherokee with a 24-year-old woman as it was parked on the side of the M1 northbound at Gaven, west of the Gold Coast.

Just before 3am the Jeep was struck by a grey Toyota Hilux near the Smith Street on-ramp.

The boy was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital but died a short time later.

The 24-year-old woman, who was driving the Jeep, was taken to the same hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the Toyota, a 51-year-old man from Loganlea, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Police are on the scene and investigations are ongoing.
