An innocent Melbourne family has had to cower in their home as a gang of thugs tried to smash through their house in what police say was a case of mistaken identity.

In the early hours of February 23, a gang wielding machetes, a baseball bat, and a firearm attempted to invade a residence in Pakenham. Inside, a family, including a three-year-old and a six-year-old girl, were asleep as the assailants launched their assault.

Surveillance footage captures the group shattering windows and attempting to force their way through the door. When their efforts to enter the house failed, they shifted their focus to the vehicles parked outside before making their escape.
