A high-speed train travelling to the Spanish capital Madrid has derailed and collided with another train, killing more than 20 people.

A train en route from Malaga in southern Spain to Madrid derailed in Adamuz, causing it to veer onto an adjacent track, Spain’s rail operator ADIF reported.

The derailment also affected another train, traveling from Madrid to Huelva, which was on the neighboring track and subsequently derailed as well, according to the statement.

A Spanish interior ministry official informed the media that the tragedy has resulted in the deaths of more than 20 individuals.

Details regarding the exact number of fatalities on each train remain unclear, and the total number of injured passengers is still being determined.

Initially, emergency services reported 25 people with severe injuries, but that number has since increased to 73.

They have been taken to six different hospitals, according to the official.

The regional Civil Protection chief, María Belén Moya Rojas, told Canal Sur that the accident happened in an area that is hard to reach.

The train that derailed was operated by Iryo, a private high-speed rail operator owned by Italy’s state-owned rail company, a Spanish regional airline, and the Spanish infrastructure investment fund.
