A routine evening walk in Sydney‘s inner-east ended in tragedy after a dog was killed by a hidden electrical danger beneath the pavement.

A leisurely walk turned tragic for a woman and her two dogs on Crown Street in Surry Hills when one of the pets was tragically electrocuted after stepping on an electrified manhole.

“It was terrible. You’re walking along with a dog, and all of a sudden, it gets electrocuted and dies. So heartbreaking,” a witness said.

Witnesses described the heart-wrenching scene as the surviving dog, a black Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Ninja, mourned its sibling by refusing to leave its side, howling for hours.

Authorities later identified the source of the deadly incident as an exposed wire emanating from a defective underground link box.

“We deeply regret and extend our heartfelt apologies and condolences for this tragic incident,” stated Deon Apps from Ausgrid.

Energy provider Ausgrid has accepted full responsibility for the tragedy.

“We’d like to extend our sincere apologies and condolences to the unfortunate incident that occurred,” Deon Apps from Ausgrid said.

“From what we know, we think it’s an isolated incident.”

Pouring rain likely created a pathway from the live wire to the lid’s metal rim.

For more than 15 minutes, people unknowingly walked over the live circuit before it was cordoned off; they were saved only by the rubber soles of their shoes.

Energy provider Ausgrid is now investigating the circumstances of the incident.

“I’ve worked here for ages, lived in Sydney for ages… never heard of anything like this happening, especially in Surry Hills,” a witness told 9News.
The dog’s owner was also shocked and taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where she has since been released.

The council is investigating the cause of the incident, only a few weeks after the footpath was opened after being redeveloped.

Potential factors, including recent works, aging equipment, and extreme heat, are all under investigation.
