A man in north-central New South Wales was fatally shot by police after he brandished a bow and arrow during a welfare check at his residence.

The incident occurred when officers engaged with the individual outside his home on Quia Road in Gunnedah at approximately 1:40 p.m. today. Following the initial interaction, the man retreated into his house and re-emerged armed with the bow and arrow.

“The officers sought refuge in their patrol vehicle, but the situation escalated when a police firearm was discharged as the man aimed the weapon at them,” stated the New South Wales Police in an official release.

The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a gunshot wound but he died at the scene.

The state crime command's Homicide Squad will lead an investigation into the shooting.

The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command with oversight from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
