Tributes are flowing for a “well-loved” six-year-old boy who lost his life in an alleged hit-run crash in regional Victoria yesterday.

Despite paramedic and witnesses best efforts to save the boy, he sadly died from his injuries.

An 84-year-old local woman was yesterday questioned by police over the death and has been released pending further enquiries.

Police are investigating witness claims she stopped at the scene briefly before driving away.

A floral tribute near the site of the collision has been growing since yesterday evening, with flowers and soft toys surrounding a sign into town.

Convenant College Principal Joshua McEwen today paid tribute to the “inquisitive, friendly, empathetic and well-loved’ six-year-old.

“He was always one of the first to show kindness to others,” McEwen said.

“He loved learning, loved reading books, and was fascinated by the world around him.”

McEwen said just last week Caleb had expressed interest and excitement at what it might feel like to lose his first wobbly tooth, describing him as “a curious, interesting, wonderful little boy,” McEwen said.

“Thank you to all who are praying for Caleb’s family and our school,” McEwen said.

“Our prayers are also for the many others who have been impacted, including those who witnessed this tragedy, those who assisted at the scene, as well as the driver and her family.

“We don’t know the circumstances that led to this, but we do know that God sees us, and cares for us.”

The Christian school principal asked the wider community to keep the family in their prayers.

“We are committed to ongoing support of and care for Caleb’s family and our school community in this difficult time.

“We are so grateful for the support that has been offered by so many including local churches, schools and others.

“Please keep Caleb’s family, and our school community in your prayers as we journey through this challenging time together.”
