A woman is in critical condition after a shark attack at one of Australia’s most popular beaches.

The incident occurred at Coogee Beach, with emergency services responding to the scene shortly after 11 a.m. on Saturday. Reports indicated that a swimmer had been attacked by a shark.

Onlookers quickly sprang into action, pulling the woman from the ocean and providing first aid until emergency teams arrived.

Police officers administered further first aid to the victim, who is believed to be in her 30s and sustained severe injuries to her arm and leg.

Ambulance paramedics then continued her treatment before police cleared nearby Coogee Oval to facilitate the landing of a Careflight helicopter.

The woman was airlifted to hospital.

Nearby beaches, including Coogee, Clovelly and Bronte, have been closed.

There have been nine shark attacks reported in Australia since the start of 2026 — with four being fatalities.
