Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has announced that three players from Iran’s women’s football team, who were granted humanitarian visas, have chosen to return to their home country.
In a statement released on Sunday morning, Burke confirmed that despite being given multiple opportunities to explore their options, these athletes have opted to rejoin their teammates on the flight back to Iran.
Earlier this week, seven players from the team, who were in Australia for the Asian Cup, were given humanitarian visas. However, one player decided to return to Iran just hours after accepting the visa offer.
Currently, three members of the team have decided to stay in Australia.
This situation is unfolding, and updates to this story will be provided as more information becomes available.
