Rick Hogg pulled his truck in front of an Audi at the intersection of King and Collins streets in Melbourne about 7.40am yesterday to stop two men, allegedly armed with weapons, from stealing the car.
He told Today there was “no way” he wasn’t going to help in his position.
Hogg said he approached the intersection and saw what he thought was a car crash involving a Mazda and an Audi.
“As we got closer I have seen the offender with a meat cleaver demanding the car keys for the Audi,” he claimed.
“So I pulled the truck in front of him so he couldn’t take off anywhere and yelled at him through the window to put the meat cleaver down.
“Then he kept chasing the gentleman around.”
A second alleged offender climbed into the Audi and unsuccesfully tried to start it.

Hogg said he then helped hail down two police officers on motorbikes who were coming down the opposite side of the road.
“They acted quick as and arrested the offender, chased him and tackled him to the ground.”
Hogg said fear of the situation wasn’t going to stop him helping.
“There’s no way I could have gone to the job that we were going to and then on the way home hear something happened to (the driver) and I knew about it and didn’t stop to help him in some way.”
Police have confirmed two men in an Audi were armed with weapons and tried to steal the Audi.
A 37-year-old man and a 29-year-old man were arrested at the scene.
