The 25-year-old victim is recovering in hospital after being rescued.
The incident occurred after the man’s Toyota left Salisbury Highway and travelled approximately 50 metres into the wetlands, with the impact igniting a fire.
Prior to emergency services’ arrival, two truck drivers, John and Rylie, had already entered the water to assist the driver.
“Noticed the bloke, he was sort of half out of the car, so we just sort of jumped through the water, grabbed him out,” John said.
John then discovered the victim was not breathing and began resuscitating him, as Rylie flagged down arriving paramedics.
“I didn’t find out until a few hours later whether he actually made it or not, so that was a big thing for us, we just wanted to make sure he pulled through,” John said.
The humble hero says helping people is “just what you do” and would be happy with a simple “thank-you”.
“He can buy us a beer or something,” John said.
“Yeah, I’ll take a beer.”
